Buddhism is thought to have been known in Ladakh in the 7th century when the area was under the control of Tibet. In modern times since China invaded Tibet and has repressed the practice and observance of Buddhism Ladakh has become a refuge where Tibetan Buddhism can flourish.
Ladakh has more than 35 Tibetan Buddhist monasteries that preserve the rich cultural and architectural heritage of Ladakh. The monasteries host most of the festivals that feature elaborate dance-dramas where lamas in colourful robes and masks perform mimes that represent different aspects of Buddhism, such as the progress of the soul toward enlightenment and the triumph of good over evil.
You can plan your visit to coincide with the many festivals around Ladakh.
Festivals in Ladakh take the form of dance-dramas in the courtyards of monasteries.
Monks wearing colourful robes and masks perform cham (sacred mask dances) that represent the purification of mind and also the triumph of good over evil.
The monks also play traditional instruments such as drums, conch shells, cymbals, and colossal trumpets called dungchen.
Whether you’re on a long range mission to Manali or Srinagar or want something local we can help organise and support your trip.
From Leh you can ride over the world’s highest motorable road, the Khardung La, to the Nubra Valley.
Until the late 20th century much of Ladakh was accessible only by walking or on horseback.
The trails connecting towns and villages have existed for centuries and are still in use although as more roads are built the trails are less frequented. Most trails take you over the high passes into areas that are not accessible by road where you can experience Ladakh as it has been for time immemorial.
Whether you come to Ladakh for the spectacular landscapes or the unique culture or the living tradition of Tibetan Buddhism or the experience of being on the roof of the world, you’ll find it on the trails that take you to most parts of Ladakh.
Ladakh offers several peaks that are readily accessible yet challenging enough.
Stok Kangri (6130 m) is the most popular because it’s easily reached from Leh and can be climbed in 3-5 days. The ascent from base camp to the summit takes around 5-7 hours. The views from the summit into the Markha Valley and across the Zanskar mountains and Ladakh Range are magnificent.
Other peaks include Kang Yatse (6400 m, 6-7 days), Chanser Peak (6650 m, 6-7 days), Lungser Peak (665 m, 8-9 days), Mentok Peak (6200 m, 5-6 days), Zozogong Peak (6250 m, 6-7 days), Matho Peak (6200 m, 5-6 days).
In most cases the peak can be climbed in one day from base camp. An early start (5-6 am) is essential to take advantage of early morning snow conditions and to reach the summit and return the same day. Most ascents are not technically difficult but are slow going given the altitude.
Our tours are custom designed for people who like to experience unique aspects of Ladakh.
You will get personal service all the way.
